Individual Health Insurance Has No Memory

Individual health insurance starts over every January. The insurer prices the new policy as though the prior twelve months never happened. None of the previous year's screenings, prescriptions, or follow-up visits carry forward, and a member with controlled blood pressure gets the same renewal offer as someone who never scheduled a physical. That reset is the product.

Employers evaluating benefits should treat that reset as the model to avoid. An insurer writing a one-year policy cannot pay for prevention today and collect the savings five years later. The insurer cannot count on holding the member next year, and the next insurer collects the benefit. Employers can keep the record. That difference determines what a benefit can do.

The annual reset shapes pricing and behavior

An individual market insurer prices one year of claims and one year of retention risk. If a member lowers her A1C today, the cost savings show up years later, and if she switches plans, the next insurer collects those savings. The rational move for the original insurer is to fund treatment now and underfund prevention. High deductibles and thin preventive benefits follow from that math.

Members learn not to bother. When the plan holds no record, members have no reason to log a screening, complete a checkup, or stay current on medications. The renewal letter shows the same premium either way. Without a record, no reward can exist. Without a reward, compounding never starts.

  • Insurers fund treatments that pay off within the policy year and underfund prevention that pays off later.
  • Members receive the same renewal offer whether they completed screenings or skipped them.

Prevention outlives the policy year

U.S. healthcare spending runs about $12,900 per person per year, roughly double what other developed countries spend. People respond to the cost pressure by skipping care. About 1 in 3 Americans delay care or skip prescriptions because of cost. Only about 8 percent of adults complete recommended preventive services.

Prevention taken at age 35 pays off decades later. A one-year insurance contract captures none of that return. Both parties underinvest.

  • The member completes prevention and sees no pricing benefit at renewal.
  • The insurer funds prevention and watches the next insurer collect the savings.

Employer plans can keep the record

WellthCare™ is the first Health-to-Wealth™ Benefit System. It sits alongside an employer's existing ACA-compliant group health coverage and gets used first. Employees get $0-co-pay care, earn reward dollars at the WellthCare Store™, and receive automatic retirement contributions through verified preventive health actions.

The platform records completed actions and compounds the result. An employee completes a screening, the plan verifies it through standardized preventive care codes, and the reward appears in the employee's account. Those dollars are spendable at the WellthCare Store, which carries more than 3,000 FSA-approved health-supporting products, and employers direct savings from the program into automatic retirement contributions through a SEP or pension account.

What a recorded health action changes

An employer that keeps records can pay for prevention now because the employer keeps the claims experience later. The employee sees the immediate value of a two-minute scan or a preventive screening. The retirement balance grows with each verified action. The Store dollars buy products aligned to the plan of care.

After six to twelve months of usage, the WellthCare Readiness Index™ shows an employer when expanding makes financial sense. The report uses the employer's own claims and usage data. It does not lean on industry averages or vendor projections. An employer can prove the effect with its own record. Math, not marketing.

The difference appears at renewal

An individual policy holder opens the renewal notice and sees a premium. Nothing in that offer reflects the preventive work done during the year. An employer on a WellthCare Plan sees a record of verified actions, a Store balance employees use, and retirement accounts that grew because health actions were completed. The difference is structural.

Employers choose between two record-keeping designs. Keep a benefit that resets every year and rewards only the current claim, or add a system that records prevention and compounds its value. WellthCare adds alongside the existing plan with no new employer out-of-pocket cost. The employer sees fewer claims, lower costs, and higher retention.
